Home building revives in St. Louis
Nov 18th 2012, 06:21

Carpenter Walter Olszewski is seeing more familiar faces these days, and he's happy about it. "We've brought a lot of the young guys back," he says, taking a break inside a big house under construction in Chesterfield. "A lot of the young guys I worked with have been out of work for two years and more. They're just getting back into it." Olszewski works for McBride & Son, the region's largest builder. In the depth of the housing bust, McBride cut his staff to 250 carpenters. Now, it's up to 400 and adding more. The home building business fell into a deep depression in 2007, and is just now crawling out. As of October, {a...

Quicken Loans' top echelon cares about rank and file
Nov 18th 2012, 06:17

Kids' birthdays can be a big deal around Quicken Loans. Younger children of employees of the online mortgage lender get handwritten birthday cards from CEO Bill Emerson and a small gift -- all part of the family atmosphere that Quicken encourages. That sense that the top echelon cares about the rank and file is a big reason why Quicken again ranks as one of Michigan's top workplaces. When new employees join Quicken Loans, they attend an all-day orientation at which Emerson gives everyone...

Developer not sold on downtown
Nov 18th 2012, 07:00

Not everyone is moved by the momentum in Boston’s Downtown Crossing. A New York developer who filed plans for a 28-story apartment and retail tower on Washington Street four years ago — in the teeth of the Great Recession — is not yet sold on the shopping district’s recovery. “We wouldn’t consider doing anything until that hole across the street is filled,” said John Usdan, president of Midwood Management, referring to the partially demolished Filene’s block. Another New York developer, Millennium Partners, won city approval in September to...

HiLa tHe KiLLa is back in the video director's chair with 'White Girl Wasted'
Nov 18th 2012, 06:26

Related topics music videorapwasted Advertisement Ever controversial and fun, Hila Perry, aka "HiLa tHe KiLLa," is gearing up to film a new comedy rap video for her new song, "White Girl Wasted." The song is based upon the often comical bumblings of white girls who come into the city to party from places like Staten Island and New Jersey. Capturing the omg's and lol's, as well as the short skirts and high heels that parade about the New York club scene, the video is a tribute to, as well as a parody of, the wild, drunken wonderland of club-addicted girldom. The Indiegogo site for the video has a trailer showing what one can expect from the finished product, which is set to be filmed on...

Down to the fans for final three X Faxtor contestants
Nov 18th 2012, 06:12

THE X Factor's final three have made their last-ditch appeals for votes in their home towns before Tuesday night's grand finale. And when the winner is crowned, we might get a clearer idea on who votes for these reality talent shows. There might be an army of teenage girls backing boy band The Collective but slightly awkward country boy Jason Owen and 25-year-old industry veteran Samantha Jade are still in with a chance. "I'm not sure who's voting for me, but I'm so lucky to have their votes - they're the reason I'm still here," Jade says. "It would mean the world to me if I won. It would mean that dreams really do come true and you just have to keep believing."...

'A Late Quartet's' Catherine Keener gets coached in finer points of playing
Nov 18th 2012, 06:11

By David Ng Los Angeles Times Comments Keener ) Having a Hollywood actor learn Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 for a role is a little like asking a child to master differential equations â€" it's virtually impossible. But in the case of music, the task can be convincingly faked with the right editing, and more important, with the right music coaches. When the makers of the movie "A Late Quartet" were looking for a musician who could help actress Catherine Keener get into character as a classical viola player, they sought the help of Carrie Dennis, the Los Angeles Philharmonic's principal violist, who joined the orchestra in 2008. Dennis says that she spent two weeks hanging out with the...

Movie Scoreboard
Nov 18th 2012, 06:33

"Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" * * * Documentary explores the life of celebrated fashion writer and editor Vreeland, who worked for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue from the late 1930s through the early '70s. Her life and legacy come alive courtesy of a trio of directors that includes Lisa Immordino Vreeland (who is married to the fashionista's grandson). The movie is filled with rare footage, photos and interviews, but the captivating center is Vreeland herself. There was a price to be paid for all her success, and interviews with her sons touch on some of the complexity of their relationships. As to the rest of it, the filmmakers let her have her say. Rated PG-13; nude images. 1 hour, 26...

As mom to Bond, Judi Dench reflects on her 007 reign
Nov 18th 2012, 06:11

By Jake Coyle Associated Press Comments Nothing is so much of a boys' club as a James Bond movie. That is, except when Judi Dench is on screen. As MI6 head M, Dench has been the Bond matriarch: the strong-willed, no-nonsense mainstay of feminine authority in a movie franchise that has, more often than not, featured slightly more superficial womanly traits. "Skyfall" is Dench's seventh Bond film, an unimpeachable reign that has encompassed both the Daniel Craig and Pierce Brosnan eras of the British spy. For a number of reasons, "Skyfall" is her most notable Bond film. For the first time, Dench isn't just dictating orders from headquarters, but is thrown directly into the action when a former...

Obama voters weren't all in for Filner
Nov 18th 2012, 06:23

Rep. Bob Filner tied himself closely to President Barack Obama and the Democrats during his successful campaign for San Diego mayor, while Councilman Carl DeMaio didn't even endorse his party's standard-bearer, Republican Mitt Romney. But an analysis of the votes cast on Nov. 6 suggests that Romney voters were significantly more likely to vote for DeMaio than Obama voters for Filner. Almost 20 percent of Obama voters took a pass on Filner — about 10 percent skipping the mayor's race, and about 9 percent picking DeMaio. By comparison, about 2 percent of Romney voters sat out the mayor's race — and less than one fifth of one percent of them...
