BEIJING (AP) — Police say a traffic accident has sparked protests in a southeastern Chinese city, with angry residents smashing police cars and overturning three police vans. Residents say thousands took part in the protests. The reason for Saturday evening's clashes is unclear. One resident says onlookers were angry because police and paramedics took nearly an hour to arrive and help the injured. A Hong Kong-based rights group says the protests had to do with corruption. Police in Fuan city in Fujian province said Sunday that a sedan had collided with a car and three motorcycles at just before 8 p.m. Saturday, leaving five people injured.
