ideas for rejuvenating the All-College Classic
Dec 15th 2012, 08:28

The pie-in-the-sky scenario. Do away with everyone but the Sooners and Cowboys and have them go at it at the Chesapeake Energy Arena every December. Of course, you are asking the schools to give up their home Bedlam date every other year, if it's going to count as a conference game. If not, you are asking the NCAA and/or Big 12 to exempt the extra game from league records, and asking OU and OSU to face the prospect of four meetings in the same season. Good luck either way. 2. Bedlam...

Owner of Rivera plane being investigated by DEA
Dec 15th 2012, 07:37

PHOENIX -- The company and the man who runs the business that owns a luxury jet that crashed and killed Latin music star Jenni Rivera is under investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the agency seized two of its planes earlier this year as part of the ongoing probe. DEA spokeswoman Lisa Webb Johnson confirmed Thursday the planes owned by Las Vegas-based Starwood Management were seized in Texas and Arizona, but she declined to discuss details of the case. The agency also has subpoenaed all the company's records, including any correspondence it has had with a former Tijuana mayor who U.S. law enforcement officials have long suspected has ties to organized crime....

Reinhold Schmolzer & Orchestraconteur: Miraculous Loss of Signal (2012)
Dec 15th 2012, 07:42

Reinhold Schmölzer is a vivid impressionist, a trait he makes evident as a composer, arranger and drummer on his debut, Miraculous Loss of Signal. He is as eloquent in his writing as he is in his arrangements, letting his Orchestraconteur express itself in all its majesty while opening the door for soloists, who go out on trails that are free, yet stay within the compass of the tunes which can weave in and out of idiomatic patterns. The result...

Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day
Dec 15th 2012, 07:42

View All12Next » Led Zeppelin Celebration Day Three P Films Limited 2012 Many biographies and history books reveal that in the early autumn of 1968, in a stuffy London rehearsal room, guitarist Jimmy Page gathered together a group of newly found musical colleagues— singer Robert Plant, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham—to whom he called out a sequence of chords. Seconds later the studio room reverberated to the sounds of "Train Kept a Rolling," which laid the foundation of what would become one of the most influential forces in the history of rock music....

Eivind Aarset: Dream Logic (2012)
Dec 15th 2012, 07:42

The ingredients are all electric on guitarist Eivind Aarset's Dream Logic: plugged-in guitar and bass; programming; samples; dictophone; and electronics. The resulting atmospheric layering of sound with subtle dynamics and inorganic drones could be described as sterile, but what a beautiful, mysterious sterility it is. The Norwegian guitarist has contributed to several...

Noseda leads Phila. Orchestra in Tchaikovsky
Dec 15th 2012, 08:12

Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Classical Music Critic Posted: Saturday, December 15, 2012, 3:01 AM Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3 has never quite taken off. The listening public adores the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth, but mention the Third and you draw a stare. Is it that ideas in the Third, the "Polish," are exploited with greater economy and real edge in other Tchaikovsky works? Or has it suffered from inconsistent advocacy from the podium? Italian conductor Gianandrea Noseda brought it out of the shadows Thursday night in Verizon Hall. His concepts of a lean sound and flexible beat were beneficial counterpoint to the Philadelphia Orchestra's natural inclination to swaddle Tchaikovsky in...

If Vic and Sade were urban . . . . : Old-time radio listening, 14 December
Dec 15th 2012, 08:23

Ethel & Albert: Duck Hunting (ABC, 1949) Long before there was The Couple Next Door, there were Ethel & Albert. Creator/writer/co-star Peg Lynch fashioned the original at a Minnesota station, choosing to find the humour in the most mundane of mundanenesses around the house, almost like an urbane Vic & Sade, and often as not with support characters built entirely from the discourse between Ethel, Albert, and their precocious little daughter. "All Peg needs," co-star Alan Bunce (Albert) once told Newsweek, is a word, and she can write a script. She can write about nothing and do it entertainingly." She doesn't quite do that tonight, though: Albert (Alan Bunce) is hell bent on...

Iraq-Kurd deal offers hope, but challenges remain
Dec 15th 2012, 08:17

BAGHDAD (AP) — A deal brokered by Iraq's president this week gives the central government and the Kurdish minority an opportunity to step back from a military standoff that has threatened to tip the country back into armed conflict just a year after the last American troops left. The Kurds, a different ethnic group from Iraq's majority Arabs, have their own armed fighters and enjoy considerable control over an increasingly prosperous enclave in Iraq's mountainous north. Thursday's accord calls for the eventual withdrawal of Iraqi military and Kurdish fighters who in recent weeks moved into disputed areas where both seek to extend their influence. There is no timetable governing the pullout...

Syrian rebels say Americans, Britons helped train them in Jordan
Dec 15th 2012, 08:22

AMMAN, Jordan - Weeks before the Obama administration and other Western nations recognized a new Syrian opposition coalition as "the legitimate representative" of the Syrian people, Syrian rebels were receiving training in the use of light and heavy weapons with the backing of the Jordanian, British and U.S. governments, participants in the training have told McClatchy Newspapers. The training took place as far back as October and involved hundreds of rebels, the participants said. In one case, the rebel participant said men he believed were American intelligence officers observed what was taking place. Another said he believed British officers were helping to organize the...

(Source: Suffolk Coastal District Council) Last month's decision by Suffolk Coastal's Cabinet to go ahead with plans to relocate Woodbridge's Tourist Information Centre (TIC) to the town's library has been confirmed by the Council's Scrutiny Committee. The move will enable the Council to improve its customer facilities by providing both a TIC and a customer service point for general Council inquiries in the centre of the town. Crazy things fundamentalists say about shooting in Connecticut
Dec 15th 2012, 08:23

As I was listening to talk radio today and a number of callers stated that a reason for this horrific shooting in a grade school in Connecticut this Friday, was the removal of religion/prayer/God from schools. Simply, it was not. First of all children can pray all they want, the only change since 1962 has been that the government itself was prohibited from...

US commanders give upbeat war effort reviews
Dec 15th 2012, 08:21

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- U.S. commanders are offering glowing reviews of their 2012 war campaign, upbeat assessments that could be interpreted as leeway for President Barack Obama to order another round of troop withdrawals next summer. Obama faces a tension between calls by Democrats and even some Republicans to wind down the war more quickly and the military's desire to avoid a too-fast pullout that might squander hard-won sacrifices. U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has not yet recommended to Obama a specific pace of withdrawals for 2013. But during the Pentagon chief's two-day visit to the war zone this past week,...
