US Air Force struggles with aging fleet
Nov 4th 2012, 06:18

TOKYO (AP) — For decades, the U.S. Air Force has grown accustomed to such superlatives as unrivaled and unbeatable. Now some of its key aircraft are being described with terms like decrepit. The aging of the Air Force made a brief appearance in the presidential debates when Republican nominee Mitt Romney cited it as evidence of the decline of U.S. military readiness. His contention that the Navy is the smallest it's been since 1917 got more attention thanks to President Barack Obama's quip about "horses and bayonets." But analysts say the Air Force has a problem that likely will worsen no matter who wins Tuesday. It was created in part by a lack of urgency in the post-Cold War era, and by...

Newswallah: Long Reads Edition
Nov 4th 2012, 06:25

In an article in Open magazine, "The Riot and the Rot," Dhirendra K. Jha examines the communal violence that broke out on Oct. 24 in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, while a Hindu procession was carrying idols of the Goddess Durga for immersion in the Saryu River. The violence, Mr. Jha writes, was not spur-of-the-moment but carefully orchestrated by Hindu rioters against minority Muslims. According to Mr. Jha's account, the rioters mingled in the procession before proceeding to loot and ransack shops owned by Muslims, as well as vandalizing a mosque. He argues that the cause behind the violence requires no investigation, since the perpetrators wanted to make their message clear; one sign of that, he...

Aretha Franklin and the origin of the "spirit feel"
Nov 4th 2012, 06:15

Aretha Franklin performs at the Nokia Theatre L.A. in July in Los Angeles. (Chris Pizzello, The Associated Press) CHICAGO — The gospel-truth, if you believe most of the history books: Aretha Franklin didn't really find her true voice until she began working with producer Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records in 1967. "My idea was to make good tracks, use the best players, put Aretha back on piano and let the lady wail," Wexler wrote in his autobiography, "Rhythm and the Blues: A Life in American Music" (1994). Indeed, Franklin's 1967 Atlantic debut album, "I Never Loved a Man (The Way That I Loved You)," is considered a soul masterpiece. But the Aretha before and...

Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams For Beginners
Nov 4th 2012, 06:28

View All123Next » Fifty years after his death, Ernie Kovacs is de rigueur. Mainstream, even. His angular, imaginative approach to humor was impossible to imitate, but his influence on television-specifically television comedy-is intractable. He's the Thelonious Monk of the small screen. And just trying to play in a Monkish style always points out that Monk is Monk and nobody else is, so it is with TV and Kovacs. The jazz world often assumes that the avant-garde thinks and operates independent from the mainstream. We'd be shocked to find saxophonist Ellery Eskelin on singer Jane Monheit's new disc. But there are other avant-gardes, no less wild, and in the mainstream. Carl Stalling's...

Anglagard: Viljans Oga (2012)
Nov 4th 2012, 06:28

Complexity can sometimes be considered a form of art in itself and it seldom follows simplicity. Complexity is also impressionism in its purest form. Its faithful depiction of the present may be deemed naïve and unsophisticated, but it remains an unfiltered, pure representation of the being. Less than 20 years ago, Änglagård's albums, Hybris (Mellotronen, 1992) and Epilog (Exergy, 1995), caused a stir in the progressive world. The blending of the archetypes of...

Broncos at Bengals: Game plan
Nov 4th 2012, 06:15

When the Broncos run Opponents have been effective running at Bengals defensive tackles Geno Atkins and Domata Peko. The Bengals are allowing 4.7 yards per carry over the center and left guard and 5 yards per carry over the right guard. That's prime real estate for Denver tailback Willis McGahee. The Broncos could find running room by spreading out the Bengals' defense and pounding at the middle. Edge: Broncos When the Bengals run When the...

Editorial: A spotlight on changes to Colorado juvenile justice
Nov 4th 2012, 06:15

The Austin Sigg case brings attention to rules regarding who decides whether suspects are tried in adult or juvenile court. The horrifying murder of Jessica Ridgeway has, for understandable reasons, consumed public attention these last weeks. It's difficult for an ordinary person to comprehend the evil that would propel someone to kidnap, kill and dismember an innocent 10-year-old walking to school. This high-interest case also is shining a light on recent...

Klis: Sophomore slump hits Bengals' Andy Dalton
Nov 4th 2012, 06:15

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton. (Andy Lyons, Getty Images) Andy Dalton is a sophomore. There you have it. No other explanation is needed for his disappointing play this year as the Cincinnati Bengals' starting quarterback. "I don't know exactly what it is," Dalton told the Denver media last week. "It's hard to put a finger on one thing that makes a change." I can. It's called the sophomore jinx. Or sophomore slump. It's a term most often associated with baseball players. Never was it more pronounced than with the Cleveland Indians' "Super Joe" Charboneau, who as a rookie in 1980 hit .289 with 23 homers and 87 RBIs. In his second year, he batted .210 with four homers and 18 RBIs....

Golson leads No. 4 Notre Dame to 29-26, 3OT win over Pittsburgh
Nov 4th 2012, 06:18

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Down 20-6 in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame was going to need some big plays and a little luck to stay undefeated and keep its national title hopes alive. It got just enough of both. Everett Golson scored on a quarterback sneak in the third overtime and the fourth-ranked Fighting Irish came back from a 14-point deficit Saturday to beat Pittsburgh 29-26. “We overcame a lot tonight. We overcame some uncharacteristic mistakes,” coach Brian Kelly said. “Last year that would have been a loss. But our team kept fighting, kept playing.” Notre Dame (9-0) is off to its best start since 1993, when it finished the season ranked No. 2. Pitt (4-5)...

Paige: CU Buffs should jump-start offense with Mines coach Bob Stitt
Nov 4th 2012, 06:15

Colorado School of Mines head coach Bob Stitt. (Andy Cross, The Denver Post) BOULDER — At halftime the Buffaloes trailed Stanford 35-0. The Colorado offense had 12 yards rushing, 19 yards passing andtwo screaming first downs. A Buffs faithful follower for 40 years grabbed me and said, "Do something, Woody." OK. The Buffs have been outscored in the past five Pac-12 games 261-51. Enough, already. I'm making a public, passionate pretty-please plea to athletic director Mike Bohn and coach Jon Embree: One major piece to solving the puzzle is 30 minutes away from Folsom Field south on Colorado 93. Give Stitt a chance. Hire Bob Stitt as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. Next...

(Cyrus McCrimmon, The Denver Post) You can't actually hear a giant clock ticking as you walk through Sheridan's Alice Terry Elementary School, but there is a palpable urgency coursing through the halls. There have been big changes lately at the little school, which looks like it could have been built at about the time its namesake retired from the district, in 1961. There is a new principal. There are new instructional processes. And there is a new laser focus on...
