Rising mobile data demand brings limits
Sep 23rd 2012, 05:14

The number of mobile devices is projected to surpass the world’s population in the next five years, and many wireless carriers are cashing in on the skyrocketing demand for mobile data. Verizon Wireless and AT&T;, the nation’s top two wireless carriers, have phased out their unlimited data plans in favor of new shared-data plans that charge for a monthly data allotment that can be used by up to 10 devices. “Unlimited data plans are not a sustainable business model for the future,” said Laura Merritt, a Verizon Wireless spokeswoman. With the new shared-data plans, customers don’t have to purchase a separate data allowance for every device they want to connect....

Libya says all unauthorized militias will be disbanded
Sep 23rd 2012, 05:01

CAIRO — Libyan authorities announced late Saturday that any armed groups not authorized by the state would be disbanded, and the Libyan military took control of militia bases in Benghazi that had been abandoned during clashes between paramilitary groups and protesters demanding the dissolution of the groups. The plan to rein in the militias was announced by National Assembly President Mohamed Magariaf, who toured the city after protesters stormed the militias' headquarters late Friday night, furious over the previous week's killing of U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans when a group of heavily armed men attacked the U.S. Consulate. At least 14 people were...

Sep 23rd 2012, 04:55

TOM HAYS Associated Press= NEW YORK (AP) — A man mauled by a 400-pound tiger at the Bronx Zoo has been charged with criminal trespass. Police said Saturday that authorities delivered a desk appearance ticket to David Villalobos in the hospital where he's recuperating. New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne says the 25-year-old told investigators he deliberately leaped into a zoo exhibit because he wanted to "be one with the tiger." Villalobos remained hospitalized in stable condition Saturday with bites and punctures and a broken arm and a leg caused by the jump Friday from an elevated train that circles the exhibit. Browne says that when a police officer asked Villalobos why he...

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Louisiana Tech turned six Illinois turnovers and a 284-yard, four-touchdown night from quarterback Colby Cameron into a 52-24 road upset of Illinois Saturday. Cameron's favorite target was Quinton Patton who caught six balls for 164 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Illinois (2-2) turned the ball over three times in the first quarter and the Bulldogs (3-0) cashed in for an early 21-7 lead. Cameron and Patton connected on a pair of early third-quarter touchdowns that put the Bulldogs up for good, 35-17. Tax penalty to hit nearly 6M uninsured people
Sep 23rd 2012, 05:10

RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR Associated Press= WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly 6 million Americans — significantly more than first estimated— will face a tax penalty under President Barack Obama's health overhaul for not getting insurance, congressional analysts said Wednesday. Most would be in the middle class. The new estimate amounts to an inconvenient fact for the administration, a reminder of what critics see as broken promises. The numbers from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office are 50 percent higher than a previous projection by the same office in 2010, shortly after the law passed. The earlier estimate found 4 million people would be affected in 2016, when the penalty is fully in...

Wall Street walks as defense joins tech backing Obama
Sep 23rd 2012, 05:13

WASHINGTON -- Health care, telecommunications and defense industry workers are fueling President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, even as Wall Street walks away from his candidacy. Those industries were with Mr. Obama in 2008 after helping to bankroll President George W. Bush's re-election campaign in 2004, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington-based research group that tracks campaign donations. "It's a sign that incumbents really attract a lot of money," said Bill Allison, editorial director of the Sunlight Foundation, a Washington-based watchdog group that tracks money in politics. "Obama's in the White House right now. The way you try to...

HIGHMORE, S.D. Bruce Roseland runs cattle here in the heart of the South Dakota grasslands, in the same place where his great-grandfather ranched more than a hundred years ago. But today, when he looks out his kitchen window, the prairie that once reached from horizon to horizon is gone. Instead, he sees neat rows of corn marching up to the edge of the blue sky, growing where not too long ago it never grew at all. "Did we ask the Indians' permission to come out here and destroy their way of life?" said Roseland, who will be the last of the men in his family with the gnarled hands of a rancher. "Well, that's what's happening to us. Except it's technology." The...
