Wildfires rip through Oklahoma destroying nearly five dozen homes
Aug 5th 2012, 01:49

WHILE residents of one Oklahoma town sifted through their charred belongings to salvage what they could after a roaring wildfire that may have been deliberately set, residents in two other towns were being ordered to evacuate their homes. The fire near Luther, which is about 25 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, destroyed nearly five dozen homes and other buildings before firefighters were able to gain some measure of control Saturday. The fire was one of several burning in Oklahoma, where a severe drought has parched the landscape. The fires include a large one in Creek County, in northeastern Oklahoma, that officials said had claimed about 78 square miles, and another...

Thanks to Scully, A. Ellis sets trend on Twitter
Aug 5th 2012, 02:24

LOS ANGELES -- A pair of home runs -- including an opposite-field shot -- is probably enough to get somebody like Matt Kemp trending on Twitter. For the humble A.J. Ellis to have that happen, he would need some help, and there is no one better in Los Angeles to provide that than Vin Scully. So thanks to a plug from the famed broadcaster after he hit a solo shot in the third inning on Friday, Ellis suddenly became an overnight social media sensation. "It was pretty busy," Ellis said about his Twitter account after the game. "I got home and I watched the replay of Vin talking about Twitter on the telecast. He did a good job. I'm very thankful for Vin pumping me up." Ellis went on to hit...

Ennis, Farah and Rutherford give GB athletics its greatest hour.
Aug 5th 2012, 02:21

There was a point in the Olympic Stadium on Saturday evening, at around 9.20pm, when you wanted to put the world on pause and just revel in it for a moment before the next wonderful thing caught you round the chops. One day, six Olympic gold medals for Great Britain? Hell, in one hour, around one small oval of track in east London, British athletes won three golds in such dizzying, dreamlike succession that all context and precedent disappeared off into the dark London sky. You tried to grab a record-book before they all went up in smoke. In the 16 Olympics from 1928 to 1996, only once did Britain win more than five golds in an entire Games. Not since 1908 had GB won five in a day, and that...

Garcia strong in second rehab start
Aug 5th 2012, 02:24

ST. LOUIS -- Jaime Garcia opened his second Minor League rehab start by retiring the first nine Double-A batters he faced on Saturday. This start -- which lasted into the fifth inning -- could be the second-to-last one the left-hander makes before coming off the disabled list. Garcia was extended to 64 pitches (44 strikes) after throwing about 20 fewer in a rehab appearance with the Gulf Coast League Cardinals earlier in the week. His string of retired batters on Saturday ended when Tulsa's Corey Dickerson led off the fourth with a home run. Garcia ended up throwing 25 pitches in that inning, which also featured a double. Springfield manager Mike Shildt removed Garcia, who was on a pitch...

Final day set to fire at U.S. Open Slater leads charge into U.S. Open quarterfinals
Aug 5th 2012, 02:20

Jason KenworthyWomen love him, photographers in blimps like to shoot him, Julian Wilson just likes to win heats. "On my way to save the world, on my way to save the world, on my way to save the world." The Operation Ivy chorus pounded through my headphones as I walked down the street in Huntington 20 yards behind Dane Reynolds. He had two Channel Islands boards and girlfriend Courtny in tow. On the beach is was south wind, a new swell, and conditions just ugly enough to inspire a kid from Ventura, all I could think of was that Dane was on his way down to change the world -- whether knowingly or not. He wouldn't surf for another two hours. To open the day Filipe Toledo and Miguel Pupo won...

Spiny lobster season brings crunch to Keys
Aug 5th 2012, 02:23

If you don't have reservations at a motel in the Keys for the next few weeks, this is not for you — every cubby hole is now booked there as the annual crush of "bug-lovers" swarms in from every corner of the state for the beginning of the regular spiny lobster season on Monday. There are literally traffic jams of vehicles towing dive boats on U.S. 1 throughout the first week of the season — and it's not uncommon for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to set up checkpoints on the road, flagging down every vehicle pulling a boat to check for over-the-bag-limit or under-the-size-limit lobsters. Not only that, but the commission...

Pagan a believer in working overtime

DENVER -- Following his three-hit, four-run effort in the Giants' 16-4 rout Friday over the Colorado Rockies, Angel Pagan couldn't have been blamed for kicking back and relaxing. Instead, he headed for the Coors Field weight room for a brief but diligent workout. Pagan is among numerous players who include this type of extra work in their daily regimen. "It's very important to maintain yourself through the whole year," the center fielder said Saturday. "You work so much in...

LONDON - Willie Mays stumbled around in a Mets uniform, and Babe Ruth finished with the Boston Braves. Tiger Woods, the greatest of phenoms in the most difficult of sports, hit a career wall after his car hit that fire hydrant. Jets' Holmes suffers possible broken rib
Aug 5th 2012, 02:26

CBSSports.com wire reports Aug. 4, 2012 9:01 PM ET CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Santonio Holmes walked off the field and into the locker room, his side hurting - potentially leaving a big gap in the New York Jets' already-thin receiving corps. Coach Rex Ryan said that Holmes "might" have broken a rib during the team's scrimmage Saturday night, bad news for a team that lacks depth at the position because of other injuries. "I heard he might have broke a rib or something," Ryan said. "I'm not sure about that." It appeared Holmes was injured on a third-down play when he was hit by cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who earlier in the week made some waves when he said he thought he was the team's second-best...

Linemen stay humble while leading charge of 6-man group into Hall of Fame
Aug 5th 2012, 02:24

CANTON, Ohio - Willie Roaf was in an unfamiliar role — the center of attention in front of a large crowd, being singled out for something good. No, make that: Something great. With current Saints players standing and cheering, the former New Orleans offensive tackle led a group of linemen into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday night, a six-man induction that honored those who relish the less-than-glorious role. Four linemen were inducted — Roaf, Chris Doleman, Cortez Kennedy and Dermontti Dawson, along with running back Curtis Martin and 1950s cornerback Jack Butler....
