West Africa forest biomass 'on rise despite drought'
Aug 26th 2012, 02:55

The carbon storage capacity of protected forests in West Africa has increased despite the region suffering a 40-year drought, a study suggests. A team of UK and Ghanaian researchers found that the tree composition in these areas favoured species that were able to cope with drier conditions. Previous studies suggested that drought conditions resulted in less carbon being stored as vegetation died. The findings have been published in the journal Ecology Letters. "Despite the long-term drought, there was no...

Fischer, Kerrey tangle in first Nebraska debate
Aug 26th 2012, 02:39

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) Nebraska U.S. Senate hopefuls Bob Kerrey and Deb Fischer tangled over immigration and the Keystone XL pipeline Saturday in their first campaign debate, and both pitched themselves as the candidate most likely to break Washington gridlock. The showdown at the Nebraska State Fair offered voters a look at key differences between the candidates, who are locked in a high-stakes race that has drawn national attention. Fischer, a Republican state lawmaker, and Kerrey, a former Democratic governor and U.S....

Aug 26th 2012, 03:16

Sunday, 26 August 2012, 2:12 pm Press Release: TVNZ Sunday 26 August, 2012   Q+A: Brodie Kane interviews Dr Najibullah Lafraie   Former Afghan minister warns of increased risk for New Zealand soldiers in Bamiyan.   “It seems the Taliban have found a way to penetrate into Bamiyan, so that there’s more danger and more risk to the lives of Kiwi soldiers.”   New Zealand’s PRT has helped local infrastructure, but “because Bamiyan, being an isolated place and the level of activity going on there, the impact on the overall situation is almost negligible.”   Even before today’s reported threats by Taliban leaders, Lafraie...

For GOP up-and-comer Cruz, the future is now
Aug 26th 2012, 03:12

Ted Cruz was 10 years old when his hero, Ronald Reagan, became president in 1981. By his teen years, the son of a Cuban political refugee had memorized the U.S. Constitution and devoured economics classes at the Free Enterprise Institute in Houston. His college adviser at Princeton University, jurisprudence professor Robert P. George, described him as "exceptionally bright, exceptionally poised and exceptionally articulate." "What's not to like?" George said last week. "He has all the ingredients." As Republicans prepare to gather this week for their national convention in Tampa, party leaders are betting that Cruz, now 41, has the ingredients to become one of the stars of a new generation...

Bob Kravitz: Biggest winner in Luck-RG3 hyped matchup is league
Aug 26th 2012, 03:14

LANDOVER, Md. -- In our more sober-minded moments, we know that Andrew Luck versus Robert Griffin III in the preseason means absolutely nothing. Here, for an example, was an article written in August 1998: Round 1 went to Ryan Leaf and the San Diego Chargers The meeting last night between Leaf, the second pick in the NFL draft, and Peyton Manning, the No. 1 pick, was only the second time in NFL history quarterbacks picked 1-2 in the draft had faced each other as rookies. Leaf was 15-of-24 for 172 yards, set up one touchdown and ran for a score as the Chargers broke a 3-3 tie at half and beat the Colts 33-3. It was only an exhibition game, but after a shaky half, Leaf looked sharp in leading...

Santana High grad Needy in strong comeback with Padres
Aug 26th 2012, 03:05

The left arm of San Diego native James Needy prominently sports a tattoo of the downtown skyline of his hometown. All that's missing is Petco Park. Perhaps that would be too presumptuous for Needy, who after missing most of his first two professional seasons seems to have his career back on track. The Padres sixth-round pick in the 2009 draft, Needy, a graduate of Santana High, is 6-2 this season with a 1.95 earned run average for low Single-A Fort Wayne. He has pitched in 31 games with the last three coming as a starter. In those three starts, he...

Aztecs warm up to their Alaskan long snapper
Aug 26th 2012, 03:05

Some kids grow up with a strip mall across the street from the house. Others are lucky enough to have a park close by. In San Diego State long snapper Jeff Overbaugh's neighborhood in the suburbs of Anchorage, Alaska, you only need to walk about one block to find wilderness – 2.5 million rugged, uninterrupted acres of it. Grizzly and black bears frequent the area near the homes, but it's the moose that are much more bold and dangerous. They'll lope down the middle of the street and stomp you to death for looking at them sideways. "We have a saying up...

HAMILTON â€" A crew of five workers gets paid to clean up the grounds at the 265-acre Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park, but volunteer Bill Stevens, 65, is in charge of a bigger job. The retired machinist climbs the 60-plus sculptures, some of them massive. Stevens washes and waxes them, refreshes their paint and welds the sculptures back together. HeÂ's been at it since March, documenting the fix-ups for probably the first time since the park opened 15 years ago. HeÂ's sometimes called upon to do other dirty work, too. Like the time a couple of park...

B.J. Cleveland makes Dallas version of 'The Producers' a smash again
Aug 26th 2012, 03:20

Who needs Nathan Lane when you've got B.J. Cleveland? After the huge splash the bawdy Broadway musical version of Mel Brooks' The Producers made in 2001, it soon became apparent that much of the show's popularity relied on the two original stars, Lane and Matthew Broderick. The show didn't run in New York nearly as long as might have been expected, and the national tour fizzled. Uptown Players opened the first locally produced professional version on Friday. Almost everything about the show is terrific (except for a frequently out-of-tune...

Aug 26th 2012, 03:04

Australia is not even halfway through its mining investment pipeline, Trade Minister Craig Emerson says. Resources Minister Martin Ferguson said earlier this week the mining boom was ‘‘over’’ in reference to commodity prices after BHP Billiton announced it would shelve its Olympic Dam expansion in South Australia. Can JJB pull a win out of the bag in extra time?
Aug 26th 2012, 02:30

Since then, the Wigan-based chain has lurched from one crisis to another, despite investors and suppliers pumping more than £225m into the group and two insolvency procedures to ditch stores and reduce its rent bill. Today, JJB is again battling to safeguard its future ahead of 29 September, when it will have to stump up millions of pounds in rent. The chain's management must submit a restructuing plan by 5 September to hopefully, finally, save JJB. The options, though, seem fairly gloomy. Neil Saunders, the managing director at Conlumino, the research firm, adds: "I think it is in a pretty bleak position. An administration seems increasingly the only way out of the situation." JJB...
