Who needs Nathan Lane when you've got B.J. Cleveland? After the huge splash the bawdy Broadway musical version of Mel Brooks' The Producers made in 2001, it soon became apparent that much of the show's popularity relied on the two original stars, Lane and Matthew Broderick. The show didn't run in New York nearly as long as might have been expected, and the national tour fizzled. Uptown Players opened the first locally produced professional version on Friday.
