By Elaine Ganley Associated Press Comments Rachida Dati built her against-the-odds career by defying convention. (AP Photo/Christian Lutz, File) Paris â€" Rachida Dati built her against-the-odds career by defying convention. So it was in character when â€" while serving as France's justice minister â€" she had a daughter and refused to say who the father was. Now, what was once thought to be an exercise in discretion has morphed into a messy scandal involving tales of power, sex and ambition. Dati, now 46, says simply: "I have a complicated private life." Predicting presidents, storms and life by computer
Nov 11th 2012, 05:45

Washington • Forget political pundits, gut instincts, and psychics. The mightier-than-ever silicon chip seems to reveal the future. In just two weeks this fall, computer models displayed an impressive prediction prowess. Photos Join the Discussion It started when the first computer model alerted meteorologists to the pre-Halloween disaster headed for the Northeast from a bunch of clouds in the Caribbean. Nearly a week later, that weather system became Hurricane Sandy and grew into a superstorm after taking a once-in-a-century sharp turn into New Jersey. Then, statistician and blogger Nate Silver correctly forecast on his beat-up laptop how all 50 states would vote for president. He even...

U.S. Congress created this cliff and may now plunge off it
Nov 11th 2012, 06:27

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The "fiscal cliff," a metaphor drawn from nature, was actually created by members of the U.S. Congress, who designed it to be so horrible that they and the president would come to their senses and avert it in the nick of time. That time is now with the start this week of a lame-duck session of Congress. But it is not at all certain that Republicans and Democrats are ready to make the compromises necessary to undo the trap they set in August 2011. John Boehner Republican Party Democratic Party...

'Connected' cars would keep drivers safer
Nov 11th 2012, 06:03

By Steve Johnson San Jose Mercury News Comments While Google's self-driving car is getting heaps of attention, a lesser-known effort that would employ cutting-edge technologies to make regular automobiles safer is fast gaining traction. Under the "connected vehicle" program being developed by federal and state officials, cars, trucks and buses bristling with gadgets would wirelessly communicate with each other as well as with traffic signals, pavement-embedded sensors and other road equipment. Drivers then would get automatic warnings about everything from icy bridges and accidents in their paths to cars racing at them through red lights and lane changes they should avoid because another...
