By Associated Press Comments Eau Claire, Mich.- There was a big upset at the annual International Cherry Pit Spitting Championship in southwestern Michigan. For the first time in 20 years, the winner was not named Krause or Lessard. Ronn Matt of Chicago won the competition Saturday afternoon by spitting a pit 69 feet at Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm near Eau Claire, just north of the Indiana border. But Krause finished fifth Saturday with a spit of 52 feet, 10 inches. Owner Herb Teichman launched the...

Navigating fitness factions
Jul 7th 2012, 21:38

Burmese Student Leaders Freed After Detention
Jul 7th 2012, 22:20

Burmese officials, facing criticism from human rights groups, released up to 20 student leaders after briefly holding them ahead of the anniversary of a deadly 1962 military attack on students in Rangoon. Burma's political activists said the arrests are “a misunderstanding” and called on the military-backed civilian government to show greater confidence in student leaders. The student leaders, freed late Saturday, had been arrested a day earlier and held at undisclosed locations just as they were preparing to mark the 50th anniversary of an army attack on Rangoon University. Police detained the...

Colleges deal with Gluten-Free 101
Jul 7th 2012, 21:38

When Max Timmons began looking at colleges, he boiled down his requirements. "I wanted a good school in a big city with public transportation and lots of cheap Asian food nearby," he said. The food preference was not just because Timmons, 18, expected to crave Moo Goo Gai Pan in the middle of the night. The recent St. Paul Central graduate is gluten-intolerant; his celiac disease was diagnosed when he was 13. Timmons gravitates to Asian food because it is likely to be free of wheat and other grains that he avoids. When Timmons' mother and brother also learned that they have celiac disease, the whole family altered their dining habits. They order gluten-free pizza delivered from...
