Offshore gains push stocks strongly higher

Australian shares have opened strongly higher after US and European markets rallied following better-than-expected US jobs figures and a more positive view of the European Central Bank's (ECB) stand on the eurozone debt crisis. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 49.4 points, or 1.17 per cent, at 4270.9, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 47.7 points, or 1.12 per cent, at 4290.7. The dollar has risen to its highest point against the greenback since March. The Aussie was recently buying $US1.0562, up from $US1.0521 late last week.
