KINSHASA, 30 November 2012 (IRIN) - The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) estimates that 140,000 people have been forced to flee battles taking place in and around the eastern city of Goma since November 15. The crisis has been escalating: Rebel group M23 took control of Goma on 20 November, and surrounding communities are finding themselves caught between government and armed forces. The upsurge in fighting has added to what OCHA describes as the country’s already monumental humanitarian needs.
