NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For four days at baseball's winter meetings, Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin watched one average free agent after another get three-year deals at substantial pay. He decided that trend made no sense for his ball club. "We're leaving the meetings knowing a lot of free agents are off the board now," said Melvin, who did not make one offer here.
