By Lee Bergquist Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Comments Milwaukee â€" Democrat Tammy Baldwin emerged victorious in a hard-fought race over Republican Tommy Thompson for U.S. Senate and made history twice Tuesday night. Baldwin is both the first woman from Wisconsin elected to the U.S. Senate and she becomes the first openly gay person to serve in the Senate. "I didn't run to make history, I ran to make a difference," she said. "A difference in the lives of students worried about debt and seniors worried about their retirement security."
