The award was conceived in 1990 to mark the tenth anniversary of the Prince of Asturias Awards. The prize is given to the town which has stood out in "the protection and preservation of the natural environment, environmental, historical heritage, cultural or artistic or also in conducting community works or other outstanding demonstrations of solidarity."
