Militants attacked a prison in Tikrit on Thursday, freeing dozens of inmates and clashing with guards, security officials and a witness said. The prison, which housed several hundred inmates, many of whom are suspected of links with Al Qaeda, was attacked by unidentified gunmen after a car bomb exploded outside the main gate.
