Ministers were today accused of paying for a ground breaking scheme to limit care home bills for the elderly with a "stealth" increase in inheritance tax. The coalition will today announce that lifetime elderly care bills will be capped by the state at £75,000 while nobody with assets of less than £123,000 will pay anything at all towards their care in old age. But thousands more people will be hit with inheritance tax bills because of a three-year extension of the freeze in the £325,000 threshold - £650,000 for couples - at which the tax kicks in at 40 per cent.
