Six years is a long time in politics. Wind the clock back, and the shadow chancellor was making a bold promise, greeted rapturously by the party faithful. A slightly-more youthful looking George Osborne announced the next Conservative Government would raise the inheritance tax threshold to £1m. His argument was uncompromising: "Thanks to Gordon Brown, this unfair tax falls increasingly on the aspirations of ordinary people. These are people who have worked all their lives....
