Cyrus Chestnut, who turned 50 this past week, is known for his soulful sync of jazz and gospel music. He sees the two as rooted in the same cultural tree. "Gospel is part of my DNA," says the Baltimore native. "It's who I am." On recordings such as "Revelation," "Blessed Quietness," "You Are My Sunshine" and "Spirit," Chestnut explores his church roots. They're certainly not new to him.
