Heart failure successes not seen in younger patients
Mar 7th 2013, 13:18

Though fewer American adults were hospitalized with heart failure during the last decade, hospitalization rates among heart failure patients under age 55 saw the least change, according to a new study. "There have been significant reductions in the absolute number of heart failure hospitalizations. It's just the speed is not the same among the younger patients," said Dr. Jersey Chen, the study's lead author from Kaiser...

Closing NHS services: the impossible job?
Mar 7th 2013, 12:24

The verdict over child heart surgery in Leeds is just the latest twist in a long-running fight over the future of this complex area of care. The debate has been raging for over a decade and has already been subject to legal challenges - a perfect illustration of why changing the NHS remains an incredibly difficult task. The medical profession is united in the belief that expert care needs to be offered at fewer sites. Child heart surgery is the prime example of that. It is one of the most complex procedures undertaken by the NHS with just 3,600 operations carried out each year. To provide a uniformly high quality and safe service...

Medical tourism offers travel firms untapped growth
Mar 7th 2013, 12:41

A dentist's office may not be everyone's idea of a perfect holiday destination. But a growing number of Europeans are travelling abroad for medical treatment to save money, or maybe to combine a visit to the doctor with some sightseeing, creating a fast-growing market that is still largely untapped by traditional tour operators. "It was simply cheaper for me to go to a dentist in Hungary," said a 42-year-old physical therapist from Berlin, who did not want to give his name. He chose the clinic near Budapest from an Internet advertisement, enticed by hundreds of euros in savings compared with the same treatment in Germany. He was happy to find when he got there that the clinic was clean, the...

Stomachache? Here's what could be wrong
Mar 7th 2013, 12:41

We may not like to bring it up at cocktail parties (or especially over dinner), but let's be honest: One of our number-one health concerns has to do with going number-two.  Up to 70 million Americans deal with digestive problems like constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), according to the National Institutes of Health, and women tend to be way more likely than men to get gastrointestinal (GI) ailments. Two-thirds of IBS sufferers, for instance, are female, and we're also twice as likely as men to get constipated (oh, joy).
