Galloway/Detroit News) Long before George Perles became coach at Michigan State in 1983, he coached at a small school on Detroit's east side that was a powerhouse. That was Detroit St. Ambrose, where Perles spent three seasons (1962-64) and guided the Goodfellows to the 1962 and 1964 titles. This year is the 50th anniversary of Perles' first St. Ambrose championship team, which beat Detroit Cooley, 19-0, for the city championship.
