A coal mine explosion in eastern China has killed at least 14 people just days after a blast in the country’s southwest left 44 dead. The official Xinhua News Agency said dozens of miners were working when the blast ripped through the Gaokeng coal mine in Pingxiang, in Jiangxi Province, on Sunday. Xinhua said 23 miners escaped or were rescued and 14 were confirmed dead. It said that one miner remained missing on Monday and that 11 workers were hospitalized. The blast in Sichuan last week killed 44 people. A version of this brief appeared in print on September 4, 2012, on page A12 of the New York edition with the headline: China: Deadly Blast at Mine.
