John Kane-Berman's article accurately summarises the communist police states of E astern Europe and the numerous corpses in the Gulag Archipelago (SA's communists are still in denial about Marx and murder, July 23). In SA, detention without trial and torture were abolished when we had a communist as police minister. South African communists, along with liberals and African nationalists, all played significant roles in ending the apartheid police state. Our world has complexity. A South African institute of research should be as interested in what South African communists do as much as in Eastern European ones.
