To the Editor: Several years ago, the New York Times published an article I wrote on the electoral college system. My thoughts about it then are still relevant - maybe more so following the 2012 elections, in which a small number of so-called ''battleground states'' took on a crucial importance that makes a glaring mockery of the spirit of democracy and the sacredness of our legal principle of one person, one vote. It's suggested at least every four years that we abandon the electoral college system and replace it with the direct, popular election...
